Welcome to Hebridean Adventures

The MV Hjalmar Bjørge is ready and waiting to take you on a Scottish adventure cruise. Explore the Western Isles of the Inner and Outer Hebrides, out as far as the remote isles of St Kilda, North Rona and Sula Sgeir, and north to Orkney and Fair Isle in 2026. Join our crew and guides for a wildlife and scenic extravaganza, with several species of whales and dolphins to be seen, alongside puffins, eagles, gannets, seals, otters and much more as the magnificent coastal scenery of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands rolls by. You will enjoy guided shore excursions in remote and historic locations, sometimes meeting up with our minibus to whisk you away from the coast for a while to explore further afield. This is small-boat slow-travel at its best where you can relax and unwind from the everyday and let the outdoors and nature improve your wellness and revive and invigorate your senses.

Discover Hebridean Adventures

We’re incredibly proud of Hjalmar Bjorge, our micro expedition ship and crew, from skipper to steward, chef to wildlife guide, each one plays a vital role in making your holiday truly special. Their passion for sharing local knowledge and stories, combined with their deep affection for Hjalmar Bjorge, creates the warm, welcoming atmosphere our guests love. It’s no surprise that more than 60% of our guests return each year, some for over 15 years, often more than once a season!

Our principle skipper Tony and chef Steve are 2 of the most experienced ‘Men of the West.’  Tony not just knows our area of cruising but may well know our Hjalmar like know other, ensuring the smooth running of the vessel and Steve just understands what works best when it comes to his culinary dishes and creates miracles in our (or is it his) tiny galley.

The owner of Hebridean Adventures has dedicated a lifetime to conservation and ecology, and our aim is to be one Scotland’s leading wildlife micro-expedition ships. In 2026, we’ll have three of the finest guides on the sea — see our crew profiles for more details:

  • Chris Gomersall – a veteran of Hjalmar Bjorge since 2003
  • James Stevens – acclaimed Scottish wildlife filmmaker and Springwatch cameraman, on his 3rd season with us
  • Molly Wallis – our newest addition, an experienced worldwide expedition guide joining us in 2026

Together, this exceptional team ensures every voyage with us is memorable, inspiring, and full of discovery, the kind of experience you’ll treasure long after you step ashore… until your next cruise with us! Check out our testimonials and Tripadvisor

Testimonials

Since our first trip on the Hjalmar Bjorge nearly 10 years ago we have returned whenever we could for more - I think that probably says it all! No two voyages have been the same, always moments of excitement and adventure and the privilege of being able to see fabulous wildlife and explore remote, often deserted places. With Hjalmar Bjorge and her crew looking after us so well this is my idea of a magical holiday.

Another great cruise on Hjalmar Bjorge despite the weather, with good company and excellent food. The wildlife was spectacular, especially the Alpine swift, the fishing White tailed sea eagle and Fin whales off Tiumpan head. Many thanks to skipper Dave, Hamish, Shaun, David and Linda for a truly memorable holiday. Thanks also to our professional spotters, for Megan for keeping us entertained with her stories about life as a TV wildlife presenter and James for keeping us entertained with his stories about life as a professional cameraman.

One of the best holidays we have ever had. Attentive staff and amazing food with a relaxing atmosphere. Shore excursions were optional and wildlife guides and sightings were spectacular.

A wonderful six days on board the Hjalmar Bjørge sailing out of Oban to St Kilda and the Outer Hebrides. The crew were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful and, along with my fellow passengers, made the trip a very rewarding and memorable experience.
Visiting St Kilda was the highlight, but there was so much wildlife to see and islands to explore, that this trip went well beyond my expectations.
I also should mention that the food was excellent.

We had a wonderful cruise aboard Hjalmar Bjørge. Our Skipper found lots of beautiful places with a calm anchorage. We saw lots of eagles, an otter or two, and some common dolphins, amongst other wildlife. We had an excellent wildlife guide who was able to point out so many things we might otherwise have missed. The food was absolutely outstanding from a really talented chef.
I recommend these cruises because there are only a few passengers, and we are able to visit islands and other anchorages which larger boats cannot reach. All in all excellent value.
